AI Does Not Recommend Websites

It recommends entities it can understand, corroborate and place inside a useful answer.

The short version

  • AI assistants do not rank pages; they name entities. Your website is one piece of evidence about that entity — testimony from an interested party, not the thing being recommended.
  • Three gates decide whether you can be named: the machine must understand what you are, corroborate it across sources you do not control, and fit you into the specific answer it is composing.
  • The work is legibility and agreement — one plain sentence, identical facts everywhere, mentions you did not write. Signals can be improved; answers can never be guaranteed.

Ask an assistant the way people actually ask — “best orthodontist near Jumeirah”, “a serious fit-out contractor in Riyadh, not a broker” — and look at what comes back. Not ten blue links. A short paragraph naming two or three businesses, with a line on why each earned its place. The website did not win anything. Something else did.

That something is the entity: the machine’s working model of who you are, what you do, where you do it, and whether anyone else agrees. Your website feeds that model. So does your maps listing, your reviews, a newspaper mention, the licence record, the way a food blogger spelled your name in 2023. When an assistant recommends, it is not choosing a page. It is choosing an entity it can understand, corroborate and place inside a useful answer. Fail any of the three and you are not ranked lower. You are absent.

A website is evidence about an entity. The entity is what gets recommended.

This is a different game from the one most Gulf marketing budgets are still playing. Search rewarded pages competing for position on a list; you could sit eighth and still exist. An answer has no eighth place. It names a few entities or none, and it explains its choices in plain sentences. The real question is whether the machine can write a true, checkable sentence about you. For many premium brands in Dubai and Riyadh, today, it cannot.

The first gate: being understood

Read your own About page as a stranger would. “We craft bespoke experiences at the intersection of luxury and innovation.” It is the region’s favourite sentence, and it teaches a reader — human or machine — nothing. Not the category. Not the city. Not the buyer. A model asked to vouch for a business prefers one it does not have to guess about.

Legibility is the unglamorous fix. One plain sentence that says what you are, for whom, and where — on the page, not buried in a brochure PDF. A name that appears one way, not four. This matters doubly in a bilingual market: if your brand is written three ways in Latin script and once in Arabic, the machine may see four faint entities where you see one strong brand. Transliteration is a brand decision now. Pick a spelling and defend it.

what the machine assembles before it answers your website maps listing customer reviews press mention licence record one legible entity the answer the only place a recommendation exists
The machine does not privilege your website. It is one witness of five — and the entity is whatever story the witnesses agree on.

The second gate: one source is a claim, three are a fact

Your website is testimony from an interested party, and the machine treats it that way — as a claim. Facts are what survive corroboration: the maps listing agrees, the reviews agree, the directory agrees, the licence record agrees, the newspaper said it too. Agreement across sources you do not control is the machine’s version of social proof, and it is weighed the way a careful buyer weighs it — a stranger’s word counts for more than yours.

Contradiction runs the same machinery in reverse. One listing says Marina, another says JLT. The category reads “consultancy” here and “trading” there. The opening hours disagree with the door. None of it looks like lying; it looks like noise, and noise dissolves the entity the way static dissolves a voice.

Here is the uncomfortable local truth: much of the Gulf’s best commerce is invisible to this process. The tailor who is booked out through Ramadan entirely on WhatsApp and word of mouth has a superb reputation and almost no citable footprint. Offline renown does not transfer on its own. To the machine, the brand everyone in the mall knows can be a rumour — while a lesser competitor with tidy, consistent, well-corroborated records reads as established. Unfair, and correctable, in that order.

The third gate: fitting the answer

The last gate is the one positioning people will recognise. An assistant is not compiling a league table; it is answering one person’s question, under that person’s constraints — category, place, budget, situation, sometimes season. Answers have slots. “Good with nervous first-timers.” “Handles villas, not towers.” “Open through DSF, delivers same day.” An entity that stands for one clear thing drops into a slot cleanly. The brand that claims everything fits nowhere, because the machine cannot safely place it in any specific answer.

Marketers have a name for the human version of this: mental availability — being the brand that surfaces when the buying situation arrives. The machine’s recall behaves the same way. Distinct, consistent memories surface; blurred ones do not. There are now two minds you must be memorable in, and the second one takes notes.

a question arrives with a shape: what, where, for whom every plausible entity named in the answer understood? corroborated? fits the slot?
Selection is subtractive, and every gate fails silently — no notification, no ranking report, just a name that never appears.

An answer has no eighth place. You are named, or you are absent — and absence sends no report.

The work, plainly

None of this needs a growth hack, and none of it responds to one. It responds to the same discipline as any reputation:

  1. Write the sentence. One plain declarative line — what you are, for whom, where — on the homepage, where the poetry used to be. If a stranger could not repeat it after one reading, it is not done.
  2. Make the facts agree. Name in both scripts with one chosen transliteration, category, address, hours — identical on every listing, directory and profile you can reach. Boring, and decisive.
  3. Earn testimony you do not control. Independent mentions, real reviews answered in public, the trade press, the local guides. Corroboration cannot be self-published; that is precisely what makes it worth something.

And the honesty line, because this field already has too many people selling certainty: nobody can guarantee that an assistant names you. The answer is composed fresh, per question, per person, and the weighing happens out of sight. What you control is the raw material — being understandable, corroborated and placeable. Do that work and you have not bought the answer; you have become easy to recommend. In a market where everyone else is still polishing the website, that is the quieter, better bet.
